noob time... its upgrade only right, so i have a copy of xp would i have to instal xp, then instal this upgrade on it or do i just use the xp serial in conjunction with the upgrade or do i have to have had vista to use an upgrade windows 7 license...

basically how does the upgrade work....

cus the full vwersion is more expensive but not by much on a single cop version....

With anyway Win7 package you can do full install or upgrade from Vista.

If you're on XP (like I was) you'll need a fresh full install of win7 as you cannot simply upgrade it. Make sure to back everything up. However when I was upgrading... Win7 gave me the option to do so anyway.

With Vista and I assume Win7 RC you can just upgrade and keep all your programs and settings without too much hassle. Or if you choose to you can just do a fresh install of Win7. You will only need the Win7 serial to install.

yer im still confused, i fully understand that how 7 would update files on vista but need to start from sscratch on xp cus its too different.

Atm i have only the RC installed on my pc and well i wanna buy the upgrade because its cheaper than the full version but wats the difference??? cus if you saying that you can clean instal the upgrade in what way does it differ from the full version what do i need to own to use the upgrade. I have a serial for XP somewhere that i used to used before i installed win7RC will the upgrade version require the xp serial to work? (if not what is the full version charging you extra for??????? CONFUSED (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) )

what ever version i get i will need to and want to reinstal from scratch because you have to do a clean instal to get rid of the RC files that make the pc reboot after march the 1st

Buy Windows 7
To qualify for an upgrade version of Windows 7, you need to have been running Windows Vista or Windows XP on the PC you used to test the RC.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7...-candidate.aspx

right i take it this means that i will have to have XP installed then wack in the upgrade home premium 7 diska nd then start an instal of the new OS onto a partition or other HD where as with the Full version disk i will be able to instal fresh without anything else on the HD

so basicaly to save £20 i just have to reinstal XP...right?

Get Ubuntu (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

If you've got a copy of XP i real don't see the necessity in getting a copy of Win7 before March :S Save ya pennies and get Win7 Pro when you can afford it.

Peace!

just pop in your upgrade cd, boot from it and tell it you want to do a custom install (wipe and start from scratch) enter the serial number inside the box and let it do its thing.

there is no validation whether you previously owned another version of windows.

interesting :)deals are thin on the ground but i gues from what you say gravel i may aswell just buy the upgrade and save my self the £20, i mean the serial is gonna be the same so the only difference is gonna be in the installation disk, so i could always get someone to burn me a copy of the full disk or just use the upgrade disk lik eu did grav (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

no problem (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

another thing i have learnt through doing this is that if you instal another os, for example XP like i did, while you are still running the RC the RC will notice this even if the new OS is on a seperate fucking HD and the RC will cease to function... its not as bad as it sound all the files stay as they are where they are but the RC will never boot again after it has seen any kind of OS on any HD on ur mobo...

one very good featyure tho is that during the installation of real windows 7 it lets you move the previous os files to a folder mark windows.old which is epic because i literally just moved all my program files for steam into the new directory and then opend steam and everythin i needed was there.... the best bit is that because its on the same HD the transfer is instant much better than using another hd to copy across then delete and then copy to new os.... then once you sure u got everything you need from your old files u just delete them and then defrag

fucking well thought out tbh im bvery imopressed i just whish i had realised it was going to do this as i had already back a lot up on an external drive before i installed... i recommend that u back up anyway its allwayys a good idea but be ready for this to be fucking easy:P

Good to know it went smoothly. I spent quite a while backing everything up only to find out it Win7 kept everything on the HDD!! Nonetheless it is always wise to back stuff up just in case.
